How effective are free app promotions for new apps?



There are several services that offer their users free apps. They work by partnering with app developers who agree to offer their app for free for a short period of time (normally a day or week) and pay a fee in return for their app being advertised. It's an enticing pitch for developers who have just released an app and are looking for traction, but does it actually work?
