What temperature should I limit my phone to?

The HTC One M8 only has a battery temperature indicator (and from what I gather, these components aren't too reliable, but I digress.) I've recently reinstalled BOINC (the manager app for SETI@Home) and it constantly starts and stops based on the default values for temperature. By default, it's set to stop computing when the battery reaches 40°C. This seems low to me. I'd like to increase the value so the app runs more often, but I also don't want to literally fry my phone.
What is the maximum temperature my battery can safely reach without damage? How accurate is the sensor in this model? (Gunmetal, if that makes any difference.)
Thanks very much.
