Explanation of aosp Rom differences?

Are there any MAJOR differences in all these trillions of AOSP roms? Not trying to minimize anyone's work... So far I just haven't been perceptive enough to see a formidable distinction... Any one Rom in particular worth a shot? Thanks :)
