Nexus phones worth it to get Project FI?

I'm have an N5 running on a Sprint MVMO (Ting)... the total cost of phone and services is tough to beat.

I'm considering the N5X or N6P - just for the option of getting on Project FI?

Anyone have experience with Project FI? Is this enough reason to upgrade (downgrade :( ) to a new Nexus device?

Note - my wife has an iPhone 4 - and is due an upgrade - the number one issue she has is the only carrier she can receive at her work is AT&T - however - with Project FI - she theoretically can use her WIFI for calls and texts - so not having AT&T is a non-issue? - Correct?

For myself - a lower cost phone + MVMO capabilities on multiple carriers is a top requirement. The Nexus brand does this - but so does the MotoX Pure. Downside with the Moto X Pure is no Project FI (but I could use an AT&T MVMO) - but also the size... 5.2 is about right - really disappointed that the Moto X Pure and the Nexus 6P are those 5.7" (too big) sizes.

Very disappointed that Google didn't come out with the specs of the 6P in a smaller device :(
